After a 6 week closure (August – Sept.), tataya has re-opened. We took this opportunity to improve the gallery space and to travel and buy new stock. New stock also means ¨New Look¨. Although tataya hasn´t changed its philosophy, we thought we would like to give some boost to our look. We have always been attracted and interested in the Mexican Fighting, the Lucha Libre, also called Arena México, a very national idiosyncrasy alongside the Virgin Guadalupe, the Calaveras (skeletons), cacti etc. We had already bought, last year, a few paintings on the Lucha Libre, which were the first things we sold when opening tataya in June ´07. Artist José Luis Sánchez Arriaga was already part of tataya´s live and stock. We had purchased some great art from him and we knew he was very involved in the Lucha Libre but with a twist: his sitters are not the fighters themselves but Mexico City street kids, of very poor background, who identify themselves with their fighter hero wearing their masks, just like any other kid would wear his favourite baseball team T-shirt, as if earning self respect and status within rough neighbourhoods. Arriaga´s tour de force consists in his injecting an intense and ¨spot on¨ dose of psychology in his portraits, showing the naked truth of loneliness, despair and fragility of his young sitters. A strong language, maybe … but accentuated with a knife-sharp brush and a simple palette of primary colours that enhance the realism of the subject. Powerful and catching. Alongside Arriaga, other artists on the Lucha Libre and in stock at tataya: Leobardo Huerta, Gustavo Martínez, los Vilchis, Teresa Pineda, these last two in the form of exvotos. On other fronts, we have assembled a nice selection of Barro, lacquers, our ¨trade mark¨ metal trees and more paintings. We also are preparing new shows this season. You will be informed in due time.
