New stock & La Lucha Libre

January 9th, 2010

news_16luchaAfter a 6 week closure (August – Sept.), tataya has re-opened. We took this opportunity to improve the gallery space and to travel and buy new stock. New stock also means ¨New Look¨. Although tataya hasn´t changed its philosophy, we thought we would like to give some boost to our look. We have always been attracted and interested in the Mexican Fighting, the Lucha Libre, also called Arena México, a very national idiosyncrasy alongside the Virgin Guadalupe, the Calaveras (skeletons), cacti etc. We had already bought, last year, a few paintings on the Lucha Libre, which were the first things we sold when opening tataya in June ´07. Artist José Luis Sánchez Arriaga was already part of tataya´s live and stock. We had purchased some great art from him and we knew he was very involved in the Lucha Libre but with a twist: his sitters are not the fighters themselves but Mexico City street kids, of very poor background, who identify themselves with their fighter hero wearing their masks, just like any other kid would wear his favourite baseball team T-shirt, as if earning self respect and status within rough neighbourhoods. Arriaga´s tour de force consists in his injecting an intense and ¨spot on¨ dose of psychology in his portraits, showing the naked truth of loneliness, despair and fragility of his young sitters. A strong language, maybe … but accentuated with a knife-sharp brush and a simple palette of primary colours that enhance the realism of the subject. Powerful and catching. Alongside Arriaga, other artists on the Lucha Libre and in stock at tataya: Leobardo Huerta, Gustavo Martínez, los Vilchis, Teresa Pineda, these last two in the form of exvotos. On other fronts, we have assembled a nice selection of Barro, lacquers, our ¨trade mark¨ metal trees and more paintings. We also are preparing new shows this season. You will be informed in due time. If you want to be on our mailing list to receive an invitation to the previews, please send us a mail with your data or call François: 928 2962.

Lizette Abraham’s Works

January 9th, 2010

news_15lizetteOnce more, Tataya has the pleasure to invite you to an exhibition of contemporary art. This time, we have chosen a young artist who is making her ¨début¨ with our gallery. Lizette Abraham is a young Yucatecan artist. Her work is highly individual, combining intensity with an unusual technique and a breathtaking fresh energy and dynamics. Being herself actress and photographer, motif and tool, wood and chisel, she sets a very personal and unique approach and, why not, a challenge to the generally accepted consensus of looking at artistic expression. Her work, no doubt, will generate interest, hopefully passion. A young talent in the make. Watch her! The exhibition will run from 8th through 28th May.

Door knockers and lockers

January 9th, 2010

news_13aldabasSolid iron wrought today akin the artisans in Spanish Renaissance and brought over by the monks. Made today in workshops (some over 200 years old), the models come from 16th, 17th and 18th century original pieces, mainly form churches and palaces. They are original works of art, each being created individually with the same care, love and beauty as their “ancestors”.

Mercedes & Barry

January 9th, 2010

news_12mercedesybarryMercedes and Barry are the designers of our logo. They live in England but are moving back to Venezuela, their roots, where they had dreamt to become publicists. Tataya´s logo was inspired by Venezuelan ¨petrography¨ dating from the Stone Age. Mercedes and Barry gave our logo a new life and harmony, where the lines become paths intercrossing each other. A form of spiritual language, as are the arts.

“Vernissage”

January 9th, 2010

news_11_12octubreThe “vernissage” on Friday 12th October was a happy event, as usual, even if we miscalculated this was “Symphony Night”. However, we welcomed friends and new faces who came to give us their best wishes. The atmosphere was great, with a lot of interest for our new stock and, of course, the red dots here and there. For those who came to previous shows and could not attend this one, we now have air con in the gallery … what a relief!

3rd. Exhibition Shows

January 9th, 2010

news_09instrumentos_cocinaIn addition to paintings, our 3rd exhibition shows glassware of the 1960´s and 1970´s, all mouth blown, from the USA, Italy and Sweden. Abstract and conceptual objects, they invite and seduce even those passing by the street. There was great interest in these, not only for their beauty but also for the “novelty”. The exhibition will continue until the end of the month. Come in and have a browse.

For the kitchen

January 9th, 2010

news_09instrumentos_cocinaExclusive to Tataya! Since it seemed impossible to find a kitchen “hanger”, we simply decided to design and make our own ones. Made in wrought iron, they measure 102 cm wide by 58 cm high (40” x 22 ¾”). They are ideal and an efficient tool in every kitchen …. and most decorative!
